God Commands Us to be Joyful

God Commands Us to be Joyful

In the English Standard Version of the Bible, the words “joy,” “rejoice,” or “joyful” appear a total of 430 times.

True fullness of joy comes from knowing Jesus as your Lord and Savior. You can share your joy with others but the only way they will know the fullness of joy is for them to also accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

A dear friend, Emily, texted me to say she just found out that she has breast cancer. She shared the details that she knew so far. Then she ended her text with, “I am joyful. And hopeful.”

This is the heart of a Godly woman. Emily knows the Lord, and she knows he has his hand on her life. As she goes through the upcoming tests and follows the plan per her doctor, she will undoubtedly turn each day over to God for his comfort and guidance.

And through all of it, she chooses to be joyful and hopeful.

In life, two roads spread out before you – one is full of loss and the other is full of joy. If you thought you had the option to choose, you would choose endless joy every day.

Joy is life-defining and all-encompassing. Even though we have external joys in our lives, genuine joy comes to us through knowing, believing, and trusting in the Lord, Jesus Christ.

This genuine joy does not fluctuate day by day. Sure, some days in our lives are sparkling and other days, we’re tired or overwhelmed. But faith in our Savior carries us across both the hilltops and the valleys in life.

Living a life of joy is your choice. And you must make that choice every day. Choose the road that is full of joy. Choose to follow Jesus down that road.

I’ve Never Heard of Joy

I grew up in a Christian family and married into a Christian family. I was in church almost every week for over 60 years. So how is it I never remember hearing anyone there talk about joy.

I’m not saying no one ever talked about joy. It’s just I don’t remember it. Then one Sunday in 2009, my minister spoke on the verse, “Be joyful always” found in 1 Thessalonians 5:16. I left the sanctuary that day with a new hope for life.

If you know me personally or follow any of my social media, you know I talk about joy every day of my life. “Be joyful always” is my mantra and my lifeline. I don’t want anyone else to realize they have not heard about joy – specifically the joy that comes from knowing God.

I asked my life group leader if she remembered ever hearing about joy in Sunday School or from a sermon. Her answer was “No.” Then I quizzed a few friends. The answer was always “No.” Same as mine.

God Commands Us to be Joyful

There are many verses in the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, where God commands us to be joyful.

You may not expect God to care if you are joyful or not. Or you may think God would desire for you to be joyful but that He does not insist upon it. This might be a situation where we feel sad or overwhelmed but remembering that God wants His believers to be joyful could possibly give you a reason to seek a joyful life.

The verses below show us that God commands us to be joyful.

Always be joyful. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 ISV

So rejoice in the LORD and be glad, all you who obey him! Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure! Psalm 32:11 NLT

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16:11 NKJV

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4 NIV

Joy is the change the Holy Spirit brings to our hearts, minds, and lives. It transforms who we are and every aspect of how we live.

The power of joy is never-ending.

Thoughts to Remember: God commands us to be joyful.

Expressing gratitude and trusting in God are our pathways to joy.

Verses to Remember: Be joyful always. 1 Thessalonians 5:16

“…the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10 NIV
